FAQ
What is Soft Armour?
Soft Armour is the trademark and collective name for Protaurius patented technology. This means that with a ceramic ball material we can protect personnel and important equipment against attack from small caliber, armor-piercing ammunition
How does Soft Armour work?
When a projectile penetrates the outer layer of the wall, it comes into contact with Soft Armour’s hard ceramic balls that become unsettled and fluid, quickly tumbling around the projectile until it comes to a halt. The remaining energy is distributed throughout the loose balls in the protective wall (much like an opening shot in billiards). The results are so effective that the projectile is completely stopped within 50-100 mm (depending on the caliber, muzzle velocities, distance from the shooter and the projectile’s composition).
Is it possible to use Soft Armour as a protective material in vests and vehicles?
Soft Armour is not recommended in protective vests or vehicles due to construction risks from the weight of the material being too heavy.
Does Soft Armour protect against explosion?
Soft Armour is designed to primarily protect against firearm projectiles.
Does Soft Armour protect against shrapnel?
Yes, for Protaurius protection level 3, the material is certified according to the specifications and requirements outlined in “Fragmentation Threats – STANAG 4569, level 3”.
Can the ceramic balls fall out from the projectile’s hole?
The ceramic balls have a diameter between 12-14 mm – nearly double the size of a bullet hole produced from a 7.62 projectile. Tests have been performed with over 120 projectile shots in a small area without any ceramics falling out.
Are the capabilities of Soft Armour’s products affected by cold or rain?
No, the capabilities are not affected.
Is Soft Armour affective against armor-piercing ammunition?
Yes, for Protaurius protection level 3, the material is certified according to the specifications and requirements outlined in “STANAG 4569, level 3”.
Is Soft Armour more expensive than other comparable materials?
No. Regardless of the construction solution or environment the total cost is normally lower.
Is Soft Armour patented?
Soft Armour is a patented technology and has patents pending in more than 60 countries.
How much do the ceramics weigh?
One square meter with a thickness of 100 mm of ceramics weighs approximately 150 kilograms.
How do I know which protection level I need?
As the client you determine which threats are the most realistic for your situation. An assessment of the types of weapons and ammunitions that a possible attacker may use against you is necessary. From that information, we can help you create a protection system that corresponds to the threat. If the client has a certified national or international standard for projectile protection that can be referred to, then we can relate that to our protection levels 1-3.
